On That Trail

Free verse poem

On that trail

Your big steps were faint.

You could glide over the stale leaves

I didn’t try to avoid.

On that trail

You saw some life-changing meaning in every

Brittle branch,

Brisk breeze,

And biting bug.

That you would not explain

To me.

On that trail

You wailed solid tears.

And littered the Earth

As we marched

To nowhere.

On that trail

I’d look for you

But you’d hide.

As if I couldn’t hear your breaths

Behind every bush.

On that trail

I wanted to be together

In every way.

But you looked right through me

And never slowed your steps.

On this trail

I think I should stop walking.

But I need to make it to the end

With you.

Wherever that may be.
